Apart from The Juniors Johanus Wihardja & Allan Moedjiono featured in the middle of the mens group in the 200 T/T road,
In there first ever serious attack on the World championships with 3 Junior Men & Women & 5 Senior Men & Women Indonesia sent 16 of the 26 members in the Squad from which the SEA (South East Asian ) Games team will be selected for the Games in Palembang Indonesia commencing the 11th November.
The other 10 members of the squad will compete in the WIC in Haining China, 5th October, along with ISA Workshop & races on the 6th & 7th of October, followed by pre SEA games competion in Kiang Stadium in Kuala Lumpa Malaysia against 12 N.Z. skaters & other South East Asian skaters. These skaters will gain valuable experience & will compete on the 15th & 16th October against N.Z. skaters, hopefully on the new games cources a 200 meter Bank Track & 400 meter road cource in Palembang, for a final selection trial.
I have always had the feeling that Indonesia with so many sililarities to Colombia, had the potential in the future to develope into a new world Speedskating Superpower, has proven to be more than a pipe dream.
3 Junior men having their first outing at the World champs proved that Indonesia could walk the talk, with the initial results mixed up & Indonesia left completely off, it was not easy to get a full handle on just where thr team stood.
But take out the two Asian Superpowers who were number 2 & 3 to the Akk Conqueering Colombians, in the very competitive Junior Boys grade, Indonesia beat all the other Asian countries, plus their Oceania neighbours, a very impressive first up showing of Indonesian Juniors at the World championships. The recently held belief that China was in the Big 3 in Asian speed skating could be short lived, if Indonesia continues to get Government support..
With no proper facilities to train on pre Worlds & the team arriving after 24 hours travel only 3 hours before racing started & no track practice whatsoever, its a top performance.
For the record Junior Mens Track & Road, Indonesia & Asia countries & Oceania Neighbours
263 pts Indonesia.
246 pts China.
226 pts Iran.
225 pts India.
195 pts New Zealand.
178 pts Australia
163 pts Japan.
Pakistan.
The position of Iran & India could possibly change, once the Indonesian results are added to the official list, as only 1 point difference.

Indonesia gives good showing
Our best Performer Steavanus Wihardja Junior Men. got Indonesia’s highest placing at the world champs so far with a 13th in the 500 meters road, with 40 starters, also a solid result from Zarky Rosa 22nd, the placings are one thing, but its who we are beating, that has us punching above our weight. for example Italy 17th & 21st, N.Z. 25th & 38th, Australia 15th & 29th, China 18th & 28th, Japan 30th & 35th, Chinese Taipei 20th, USA 39th. These are all from traditionally strong nations.
In the Junior Girls 500 meters Della Silviana was 16th out of 36 & Denta Kiranasari 27th, following Della were 17th Chinese Taipei, 18th & 19th USA, 20th Mexico, 21st Italy, Japan 29th & 34th, Australia 28th & 30th.
Junior mens 20,000 Elimination 47 starters, Oky Andrianto 31st & Steavanus Whihardja 36th, Oky beat off 2 China, 2 N.Z., 2 Austraia, 2 South Africa, 2 Iran & 2 China. 2 Pakistan, 2 Japan, I hong Kong, 1 India.
Junior Ladies 20,000 Elimination 41 starters another solid result from Della Silviana 26th & Sheilla Dewi 38th. ( Both are bascally sprinters, but here to gain exprience, so we put our 2 allowable in all events.)
Senior Ladies 10,000 Points Road 29 starters Sylvia 25th & Melati 28th, still struggling to get a result in ladies, ( but few weaker countries entered in the ladies )
Senior Mens 10,000 points road, 49 starters Allan Moedjion 34th & Johanus Wihardja 39th, our faster mens sprinters to see if they could hang on to the group longer, as the pace very fast.
Considering we do not have a World class track & not used to maintaining such High speeds & our lack of experienced world competitors, I consider our results acceptable.
A very good factor is our top two Juniors, Della still has two years to go in Junior & Steavanus another 1 year.

With many absences in Poland back the action of the World Inline Cup
23.08.2011: The professional marathon circuit in the ring again next Sunday in Gdansk sixth stage of a lackluster season.

In a few days, the FIRS World Inline Cup will be active after two
months off from the last stage played in the Czech city of Ostrava on 18
June.
Undoubtedly, the 2011 is one of the worst years for the professional
circuit with a series that only have 7 stages Class 1 -4 of them – and
the lowest level of teams in its history.
Still, the series continues in force and is a topic of everyday conversation among sports fans who dream to see those massive series of successful and a little less than a decade ago.
Poland, one of the growing markets for our business, will be star of the World Inline Cuo for the second year in a row and Gdansk are preparing to welcome over 1000 participants in fitness in the third edition of the already established Sierpniowy Marathon.
Unlike 2010, where many figures terrain traveled to Poland, the simultaneity of dates with the ICC in Yeosu World Championship, will complicate the desired objectives of the local organizers. Yann Guyader French and Kiwi Nicole Begg and Peter Michael will be among those absent with notice in Gdansk.
Another notable change that the event will be their new tour in the heart of the historic and picturesque Gdansk, Poland northern city located on the shores of the Baltic Sea and a merger in Europe unique architectural heritage of the different historical events that crossed the region. A new scenario of 8.4 km per lap was designed for this edition seeks to provide a show focused on the area of greatest volume of viewers and leaving the previous tour of 21 km per lap.
The Swiss Severin Widmer (Swiss Skate) will defend his title won last year but will now have to work so that his teammate Nicolas Iten can add important points to hold in the top of the ranking of the World Inline Cup Among the ladies , Germany’s Sabine Berg will also be absent this time leaving room for a third new winner in Gdansk after the victory Tamara Llorens of Argentina in 2009.
With five stages contested, Nicole Begg (X-Tech MPC) comfortably leads the overall ranking of the series with 432 units while fighting back is closed for second place between the French Melissa Chouleysko (IDEEprint EOSkate, 275 Pts) and the Slovak Renata Karabova (IDEEprint EOSkates, 240 Pts).
In males, who leads the Swiss Nicolas Iten (Swiss Skate, 260 Pts) but is stalked by the French Yann Guyader (Powerslide Matter, 256 Pts) and his partner Severin Widmer (247 Pts).

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Three teenage South Canterbury skaters will
join former world champion Nicole Begg in Asia in October. From left:

Three teenage South Canterbury speed skaters are set to test themselves in Asia.
Emily van der Hayden, Dahna Penty and Analiese Le Roy will join their motivating force, Nicole Begg, in a series of races, starting with the World Inline Cup finale in Haining, China, in October.
Begg hopes to seal the WIC marathon series title for the first time, while her young charges will get their first taste of true international competition in China.
It is huge boost to the sport in New Zealand after Begg started coaching the trio, with her parents, Bill and Cheryl Begg, four years ago on a dilapidated track at Caroline Bay.
Since then, they have made their presence felt at national championships and have raced in Oceania championships.
However, Bill Begg thought it was time they had some international exposure.
“It’s about building for the future and showing them how far they can go if they remain dedicated,” he said.
Bill Begg has spent the past two months in Southeast Asia, coaching national squads and individuals.
With the sport’s growing popularity and profile, Begg grabbed an opportunity to secure sponsorship for the youngsters through his contacts in Asia, who are keen for international competition.
Fifteen-year-old Emily, from Waimate, is a junior New Zealand champion and has three Oceania silver medals.
Dahna, 14, is a national juvenile sprint champion, and 13-year-old Analiese was the youngest New Zealand team member at this year’s Junior Oceania Championships.
Begg said it was the right time in terms of their development to expose the trio to tougher international competition.
As well as China, they will race in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia as part of a 10-strong Kiwi contingent.
Temuka masters skater Michael Clarkson also plans to make the trip, along with Hutt Valley’s Anthony Nalder and 17-year-old Mark MacDonald, another rising youngster.
Timaru-based Samantha Michael will also tour after competing at the world junior championships in Korea, and 17-year-old Stephanie Challis from Upper Hutt also gets an opportunity.
Depth will be added to the team with the inclusion of world relay champion Peter Michael.
Begg hopes several Asian skaters will come to South Canterbury in the new year to race in the Tour of Timaru.
“With the new world-class track and showing what our skaters can do, I think a number will be keen to race and get a taste of New Zealand,” he said.

Nicole Charity Ceramic Cast

comments JOHN BISSET/ The Timaru Herald CHEEKY ART: Timaru artist Marita
Bool is making a ceramic of world champion speedskater Nicole Begg’s
bottom, which will be sold at the Rotary Charity Auction.www.stuff.co.nz
Relevant offersFormer world champion speed skater Nicole Begg is not shy when it comes to charity.
The 24-year-old had no hesitation when it came to having a ceramic cast made of one of her better assets for the annual Rotary Timaru auction next month.
The South Canterbury Roller Skating Club is one of the two big organisations to benefit from the auction as it works to complete its world-class track on Caroline Bay, along with the St John defribrillator project promoted by Timaru surgeon Steve Earnshaw.
Begg said she wanted to do something different, having donated, skates, skating lessons and photographs for other charity auctions.
“Skating will benefit so I was certainly keen to help,” she said.
So she mentioned the idea to arty friend Liz Le Roy, who thought artist Marita Bool would be perfect for the task.
The plaster cast was made, making good use of cling film and the good weather, with the ceramic almost completed for the September 3 auction.
Bool said she had produced unusual things before, but this was certainly different.
“Liz really talked me into it and Nicole took it her stride.”
Begg is not shy when it comes to publicity.
In 2007 she courted controversy as she strove to lift her international profile and that of her sport by undressing.
A world champion skater at that time, she had a series of racy shots done for overseas magazines and websites and appeared on The Herald’s front page. Her motivation was simply to increase her profile in the hope of luring a sponsor and also to increase the promotion of inline skating.
It certainly worked and even Playboy magazine ran her in its sportsperson section in its international edition.
Since then Begg has let her skating do her talking.
She heads to Korea today to compete in the world championships, so will miss the auction, and also looks a shoo-in to take out the World Inline Cup marathon series in October.

Skater wins NZ selection battle
Samantha Michael
STU PIDDINGTON/The Timaru Herald
BATTLE WON: Samantha Michael has made the New Zealand speed skating team.
Timaru-based speedskater Samantha Michael has won a battle not many succeed at – she forced her national governing body to overturn her non-selection for a world championships.
The 19-year-old Michael had hoped to be selected for the New Zealand junior women’s team to compete in South Korea but missed out.
She then took her case to the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand, which allowed an appeal against a decision of the New Zealand Federation of Roller Sports not to select her and recommended the national body take another look.
Roller Sports had acknowledged Michael as the best junior female speed skater in the country but considered she was not able to meet the selection criteria in terms of a top 10 placing.
When Michael inquired about her non-selection, she was told the selectors considered she had not realised her potential since the 2007 world championships and in their opinion she had a fitness problem.
Michael was ninth in 2007, which was the only top 10 result for a New Zealand junior skater in the last five years, and has since had a number of injuries.
In 2008, she fell and broke her wrist and collarbone which took her out of the sport until 2009, when she achieved two top 20 placings. She decided not to participate in 2010 to allow full recovery and to return her fitness and confidence to 2007 levels.
In January 2011 she moved to Timaru to start intensive training, including fitness training, under internationally regarded coach Bill Begg as well as training with former senior world champion Nicole Begg.
Michael appealed her non-selection on a number of grounds, most of which the tribunal dismissed. It emphasised it was concerned primarily with process, not the merits of the selection decision, but upheld her appeal on process grounds that selection criteria were not properly followed or implemented in relation to determining her prospects of a top 10 finish.
It was also noted that the selectors had not properly brought to account Michael’s potential at international level when she moves to the senior ranks.
The tribunal also considered selectors had not assessed her fitness
on the evidence available in relation to world championship prospects,
particularly in light of her recent training. It referred the matter
back to Roller Sports for reconsideration in accordance with the
selection criteria and expressly recorded it was not a direction to
select.
Ad Feedback
Michael said she was then initially again told no, but with the likelihood of further litigation, that decision was eventually changed to a yes.
Speed Sports committee chairman Gary Clark declined to comment on the selectors’ change of heart or any lessons learnt after the tribunal hearing.
Skate NZ president Barbara Colville was no more forthcoming, declining to comment on any aspect of the case.
“All I can say is that we are very happy Samantha has been added.”
Michael, for her part, is just happy to be getting an opportunity to compete.
“It’s my last chance to compete at junior level and I wanted the opportunity to prove myself.”
The former Palmerston North skater said she also felt having competed in recent World Inline Cup marathons in Europe had enhanced her chances of a top 10 finish.
“Ultimately my goal is to help Nicole at the senior world championships.
“Perhaps she will become a multi-gold medallist, with someone there to help her.”
Michael has to self-fund the trip with no grants available to any junior skater from Skate NZ.
